The dismal political scene in our country impelled me to artistic political activism in 2016. These notes refer to the works you will see as you scroll down:
The title “Nor Any Drop To Drink: Flint” comes from Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” Like the water in Flint, MI the colors this piece range from clear blue to dirty brown, orange and rust, and the found objects are plumbing supplies.
Coal mining is devastating to the environment and to those who work the mines. The title “Coal Dust Gets in Your Eyes (and Lungs)” comes from a favorite 30’s song “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” Clean coal is a myth. The found objects are charcoal pieces.
At the time of the horrific shooting in Fergusson, MO it seemed that every day there was a new report in the papers of the police killing an unarmed Black person. The title is taken from James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time.” The torn newspaper is painted repeatedly with BLACK LIVES MATTER.
The zig zag shape of “Fracking Breaks the Earth’s Heart” mimics the earthquakes that fracking produces.
